Viral News Boy :- It has come to my notice that most people have different habits and practices that are unhealthy and may often lead to diseases, one of which will be discussed in this article.
What is elephantiasis? What are the causes, early signs, and how can it be prevented?
Elephantiasis is also known as lymphatic filariasis that causes parts of the body such as the breast, scrotum, arms, and legs to swell by affecting the lymphatic system that controls the removal of toxins and waste. It’s caused by parasitic worms(roundworms) such as Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, Brugia timori and spread through mosquitoes from one person to another.
The risk of developing elephantiasis is often a result of the following habits and lifestyle factors.
1. Poor sanitation/hygiene
2. High exposure to mosquitoes
3. Poor wound care
In many cases, elephantiasis shows no early physical signs except in chronic situation that shows tissues, legs, or arms swelling and tissue thickening.
It is recommended to take quick treatment such as antiparasitic drugs like Albenza or see a doctor(especially in cases where it should be treated by surgery) once these signs are noticed as it may cause disability, anxiety, kidney damage, alteration of body immune system, depression, and risk of other diseases in patients.
To prevent elephantiasis, maintain good hygiene, use mosquito nets, care for wounds in affected areas, wear long-sleeved clothes and pants to cover your body in areas with lots of mosquitoes, and wear insect repellants.
